The United States has issued a sharp and urgent warning to South Sudan’s leadership, accusing them of failing to protect their citizens and risking a return to widespread conflict.
Speaking before the United Nations Security Council, U.S. Ambassador Jennifer Locetta delivered a blunt assessment of the situation in South Sudan, emphasizing that the country’s leaders must move beyond political delays and take immediate action to safeguard civilians.
“The people of South Sudan do not need another year of process… they need protection and leaders who will actually work for them,” Ambassador Locetta stated.
The United States strongly criticized the government of President Salva Kiir, citing serious concerns over recent developments in Upper Nile State. According to the statement, approximately 270,000 civilians were forcibly displaced from their homes in Akobo within a span of just 72 hours, raising alarm over the scale and speed of the humanitarian crisis.
Washington also accused the government of allowing the destruction of villages and worsening humanitarian conditions, while further alleging that authorities have obstructed the work of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), undermining international peacekeeping efforts.
U.S. officials warned that these actions could push South Sudan back toward civil war if urgent corrective measures are not taken.
In its address, the United States called for immediate steps to reverse the situation, including the protection of civilians, accountability for political and military leaders, and the strengthening of UN peacekeeping operations on the ground.
The statement reflects growing international concern over South Sudan’s fragile security situation and the slow pace of political and security reforms under the revitalized peace agreement.
Observers say the unusually strong language used at the Security Council signals increasing frustration among global powers, and may lead to heightened diplomatic pressure on Juba in the coming months.
