Savanna Radio has seen a consultation meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together South Sudanese opposition forces in discussions with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete. The meeting brought under one platform representatives from the United Peoples Alliance (UPA), the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SOMMA), the SPLM/A-IO, and the People’s Resistance Front (PRF), in what was described as part of continuing efforts to seek a political solution to the conflict in South Sudan.
Among the participants were Hon. Gabriel Changson Chang, Chairman of the PRF, Cde. Pagan Amum, Chair of the UPA, and members of his delegation including Gen. Buay Rolnyang, Gen. Oyay Deng Ajak, and Hon. Cirino Hiteng. Also present were Gen. Thomas Cirilo and members of the SPLM/A-IO, reflecting a broad opposition presence at the consultation.
The meeting focused on the ongoing crisis in South Sudan, the challenges facing the implementation of peace agreements, and the need for a more inclusive and credible process to address the country’s political and security problems. Former President Kikwete, who has played a regional mediation role on South Sudan, engaged the opposition figures in discussions aimed at encouraging unity of purpose and a coordinated approach to peace.
Participants were understood to have raised concerns over the root causes of the conflict, including exclusion, weak institutions, lack of political reform, and the failure of previous agreements to deliver lasting stability. The opposition groups also discussed the need for a renewed framework that can restore trust among stakeholders and open the door for meaningful national reconciliation.
The Dar es Salaam consultation comes at a time when regional actors continue to push for dialogue among South Sudanese political forces amid renewed concern over the country’s fragile peace process. The presence of multiple opposition formations at the meeting signaled continued efforts to consolidate positions and explore common ground on the future of South Sudan.
