A high-level delegation from the African Union (AU) has arrived in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, to engage government officials and key stakeholders in renewed efforts to advance peace, stability, and political progress in the country.
The delegation, led by senior AU officials, is expected to hold a series of consultations with President Salva Kiir, opposition representatives, and members of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU). The talks are focused on evaluating the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement and addressing persistent challenges that have slowed progress.
According to sources within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit underscores growing regional concern over delays in critical aspects of the peace process, including security sector reform, constitution-making, and preparations for long-anticipated national elections.
“The African Union remains committed to supporting South Sudan in achieving lasting peace and democratic governance,” an AU representative said upon arrival. “This visit is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all parties uphold their commitments under the peace agreement.”
The AU delegation is also expected to meet with civil society groups, faith leaders, and international partners to gather broader perspectives on the country’s political and humanitarian situation.
South Sudan continues to face significant hurdles, including intercommunal violence, economic instability, and delays in implementing key provisions of the peace deal signed in 2018. Observers say the AU’s involvement is crucial in maintaining pressure on political leaders to move forward with reforms and foster inclusive dialogue.
Regional bodies, including the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), have also been actively engaged in monitoring the peace process, often working in coordination with the African Union and the United Nations.
Analysts view the AU delegation’s visit as a timely intervention, particularly as the country approaches critical milestones in its transitional roadmap.
