A senior member of the Upper Nile State Transitional Legislative Assembly, Hon. Ochan Nyuot Nyoach, has resigned from his position as Chairperson of the Committee for Culture, Youth, and Sports, accusing the government of failing to protect citizens and to confront deepening corruption and violence. Hon. Ochan entered the Assembly on the ticket of the Federal Democratic Party (FDP), occupying one of the positions allotted to the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) under the peace deal’s power-sharing arrangements.
In a resignation letter dated 27 February 2026 and addressed to the Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Philiph Akol Amon, Hon. Ochan said he was stepping down “effective immediately” after five years of service in the role. He stated that it had become increasingly difficult to continue in office “due to the current state of affairs in our government,” arguing that the administration has not prioritized the needs and security of the people.
Hon. Ochan cited the “tragic loss of innocent lives” and the lack of effective measures to safeguard communities as key reasons for his decision, saying the ongoing corruption and violence had reached an “intolerable” level that made it impossible for him to discharge his responsibilities with the integrity and commitment they require.
Despite his strong criticism of the government’s performance, the outgoing committee chair expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and for the cooperation he received from colleagues in the Assembly. He conveyed hope that authorities will, in future, focus more on citizens’ welfare and address the pressing challenges facing Upper Nile State and the country at large.
Hon. Ochan concluded his letter by thanking the Speaker for his understanding and wishing the Assembly and its members success as they continue their work. His resignation adds to growing signs of discontent within state institutions over governance, security, and accountability.
