South Sudan’s military has kicked off “Operation Enduring Peace,” a large-scale push to retake territory from SPLA-IO opposition forces in Jonglei State after recent losses. Army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang announced the campaign on Sunday, ordering civilians in Uror, Nyirol, and Akobo counties to evacuate immediately and aid groups to leave within 48 hours. SPLA-IO forces loyal to detained First Vice President Riek Machar seized outposts like Pajut on January 16, Yuai earlier in the month, and reportedly Pathai, threatening further advances toward Bor and Juba. The government responded with airstrikes and troop buildups in areas like Poktap, while Ugandan forces bolster defenses in the capital. Army chief Paul Nang has given troops one week to “crush the rebellion.”

The UN and aid agencies warn of mass violence risks, especially after reports of senior officers urging troops to target civilians. Thousands of displaced people face hunger in surrounding villages, with recent SSPDF claims of rescuing over 20 women and children from Pathai adding to conflicting reports. Opposition leaders assure civilian safety but dismiss government orders as forgeries. In conflicting claims, SSPDF says it has reclaimed Yuai and Pathai bases, with videos showing local chiefs receiving civilians. SPLA-IO rejects this as “misinformation,” claiming they repelled advances in Uror County. Fighting continues to displace residents, with no independent access to verify control.
