The National Democratic Movement (NDM) has announced the removal of its long-time leader, Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, from the position of party chairman, according to a press release obtained by Savanna Radio. The declaration, signed by Cde. Mahjoub Biel Turuk, the former Governor of Jonglei State, along with two other members of the National Leadership Council (NLC), confirmed the decision to relieve Dr. Akol of his duties within the party.

The group cited Dr. Lam’s unilateral violations of resolutions of the National Executive Commttee (NEC) and the National Leadership Council (NLC) of the NDM, as wellas contravention of the party’s basic rule, including the creation of parallel groupings within the party in violation of Article 47 of the Basic rules. Mr. Biel and Co. accused Dr. Lam of deliberate undermining of the internal party democracy, and systematic tribalism, favoritism, and nepotism  by appointing his family members to the majority position allocated to the NDM under SSOA quota. The document further explain how Dr. Lam has been the sources of division and disunity within SSOA. The group assigned leadership of the party to Cde. Mahjoub Biel Turuk, former Secretary General and former Governor of Jonglei State as the Interim Chairman of the NDM.

Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, a veteran opposition figure and founding leader of the NDM, has yet to issue an official response to his removal. His ouster marks a significant shift in the party’s leadership landscape and could signal deeper divisions within one of South Sudan’s key political movements. Dr. Lam Akol rose to prominence as a senior member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) before later serving as Sudan’s Foreign Minister following the Comprehensive Peace Agreement era. He went on to form the SPLM–Democratic Change (SPLM-DC) and later established the National Democratic Movement as part of the broader South Sudanese opposition landscape.

Savanna Radio continues to follow this developing story and will provide updates as new information emerges.
