Armed Nuer youth from the White Army in Nasir County have mobilized in significant numbers to support SPLM/A-IO forces in Jonglei State, aiming to repel ongoing SSPDF troop advancements amid escalating ethnic clashes. Reports indicate that around 10,000 White Army fighters, led by commander Kang Makana Deng, arrived in the Lou Nuer areas this week to reinforce opposition positions after capturing key garrisons in Uror, Nyirol, Yuai, and Pajut. This surge follows SSPDF incendiary rhetoric from Generals Paul Nang and Johnson Olony, which has rallied Nuer militias against perceived Dinka mobilization and airstrikes displacing over 180,000 civilians.
The White Army’s involvement, historically tied to Nuer self-defense, has shifted momentum, with SPLA-IO claiming surrenders of 23 SSPDF prisoners and threats to Bor-Juba supply lines. Government responses highlight low morale and logistical woes, while humanitarian agencies warn of worsening access in Akobo and Duk counties.
Savanna Radio notes calls for immediate de-escalation, with IGAD and UNMISS urged to mediate amid concerns that tribal rhetoric could undermine the R-ARCSS peace accord.
